Ancient Khmer temples in Isan

Above: 218 GPS locations of ancient Khmer temples in Isan (NE-Thailand). The area colours depict catchment areas. The majority of the Khmer temples are located in the water catchment area of the Mun river.

Not all Khmer temples have been visited yet (Feb.-2008). The map will be updated later and also depict eras of the various sites.

Above: Distribution of Khmer temples in Buriram and Surin province.
Above: Khmer temples along the Dhammasala Route ('Royal Road'). See also map below.

For details, see: The Dhammasala Route

Above: Yellow line: The border between Thailand and Cambodia. The red squares show locations of 4 of the Dharmasalas ('Rest-houses', 'house with fire') in southern Isan. The largest of the yellow squares show the location of Prasat Phanom Rung on top of an extinct volcano. Smaller yellow squares show the location of other Khmer temples.
